Surveyors
Special Note:
Finding a qualified marine surveyor to thoroughly inspect a boat before you purchase is crucial to your selection process. Not all surveyors are created equal so interview several before deciding and don’t let your broker select one for you. As a Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) it is not ethical and a conflict of interest for me to appoint or hire a surveyor for you.
Whereas, Yacht Brokers are licensed by the State of Florida, surveyors are not. Anyone with a business card can represent themselves as a surveyor. Make certain your surveyor is an active member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) or National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) and fully accredited. Fully accredited surveyors may also use the title of Accredited Marine Surveyor (AMS) or Certified Marine Surveyor (CMS).
If they are not member of one or both, DO NOT USE THEM. If they are SAMS or NAMS, ask them if they are fully accredited or only an Associate Surveyor, meaning they have not fulfilled all the requirements and past the test for full accreditation.
Be cautious of finding a marine surveyor by searching Google. A surveyor can appear on the first page paying Google for each time their listing is clicked, this is called (Pay per Click). Good surveyors are in demand and do not need to advertise in this manner.
